Buying a Used Car – Top Tips from the Dealers

For those with limited knowledge of automobiles, buying a second-hand car can seem like a daunting task, and with that in mind, we asked a few auto dealers for tips, which we list below.

  • Check vehicle maintenance history – This info should be in the rear section of the owner’s manual; newer cars carry a digital history, a remotely stored database on the car that can be accessed by the current owner. Look for a car with FSH, full service history, as this is evidence that the vehicle has been serviced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Test drive – Always insist on driving a car you are looking to buy, which gives you an opportunity to see how the car handles, how it accelerates and you can test many features including lights, turn signals, climate control, sound system etc. If a car feels good when you are driving, this is obviously a good sign and test what you can without doing anything unsafe. Drive into one of the car washes in Tucson, AZ and that will enable you to check the paintwork for damage.
  • Hire a mechanic – This is a good idea if you don’t know much about cars; hire a local mechanic to accompany you when you are looking at cars. The mechanic would inspect under the hood, check the chassis for rust and if there is anything wrong, he would find it. This means you can negotiate with some confidence and if the expert gives you the thumbs up, you are good to go.
  • Decide on a budget – If you are buying a car on finance decide how much you can afford to pay every month and stay within that price range. Resist the temptation to choose a car that is out of your price range. You will probably have to pay at least 10% deposit, perhaps 15 or even 20% and you could take out a personal loan.
  • Functionality – Make sure you choose a vehicle that will be functional; be practical and realistic when looking at types of cars.

Google can help you find used car dealerships, which is a better option than buying privately; private sales usually mean ‘sold as seen’, whereas a dealership offers you some kind of warranty. Choose wisely and don’t let your heart rule your head when it comes to viewing vehicles.
